Jesus said to his disciples, “I am the true vine and my Father is the vine grower. He takes away every branch in me that does not bear fruit, and everyone that does he prunes so that it bears more fruit.” Pruning is a conscious act or desire on our part to find purpose in our sacrifice, and hope in all we let go of. However we choose to prune bad habits, selfish desires, pride and self-righteousness, our efforts are tempered by patience and dependence on God’s guidance. With today’s gospel passage in mind, may the following prayer open ourselves to God’s pruning love intended for each of us. Heavenly Father, You are the Master Pruner who is growing me into the likeness of Your Son, Christ Jesus. As I remain in the Vine You assure me that I will bear fruit lasting far beyond one season. Help me to trust, and let go of the negative habits and the stubborn pride You desire to prune from my character. Cut out that which hinders my growth, and dare me to form the character You desire of me. When a new day begins, may I dare to smile gratefully. When there is darkness, may I dare to be the first to shine a light. When there is injustice, may I dare to be the first to When something seems difficult, may I dare to do it anyway. When life seems to beat you down, may I dare to fight back. When there seems to be no hope, may I dare to find some. When you’re feeling tired, may I dare to keep going. When times are tough, may I dare to be tougher. When love hurts you, may I dare to love again. When someone is hurting, may I dare to help them heal. When another is lost, may I dare to help them find the way. When a friend falls, may I dare to be the first to extend a hand. When you cross paths with another, may I dare to make them smile. When you feel great, may I dare to help someone else feel great too. When the day has ended, may I dare to pray graciously, for all that was and all that will be. In Jesus’ name, I dare to ask. Amen. And may our efforts lead us to the place Pastor Kevin DeYoung describes: “The seed of God's Word won't grow to fruitfulness without pruning for rest, quiet, and calm.” God Bless, Fr.
